Dave Darby GoFundMe

All,

I have just been informed that Dave Darby, former director of the US route 6 Tourist Association and an integral part of starting this website and the signing and preserving the history of Highway 6 in Iowa, has been diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer.   I have been in contact with him, and he is doing well and currently undergoing treatment in Iowa.  He moved to the Carolinas in 2018 with his family, so as you can imagine the cost of travel and medical expenses can and are very taxing and stressful.  A Friend of Dave’s has started a GoFundMe to help offset some of the costs and we a sharing that here.  Dave is a wonderful guy and the amount of history and knowledge he has about Highway 6 is almost encyclopedic.  We at the Historic US 6 Iowa Association wish Dave and his Family the best.  Cancer Sucks.

River to River- Iowa’s Forgotten Highway 6

What do Bonnie & Clyde, Jesse James, Nancy Drew, John Wayne, Jack Kerouac, Gary Cooper, a meteorite strike, and the inventor of barbed wire have in common? U.S. Route 6 in Iowa takes two-lane motorists from Davenport on the Mississippi to Council Bluffs on the Missouri. Built in one day by 10,000 farmers and businesses across the state, Iowa’s Route 6 is part of the second longest transcontinental highway in America. “River to River: Iowa’s Forgotten Highway 6” guides viewers on a nostalgic classic car journey through yesterday’s soda shops, filling stations, general stores, drive-ins, and roadside attractions. Experience the sights and sounds, the people and the places that the four-lanes have forgotten…before they are gone forever. From award-winning filmmakers Kelly & Tammy Rundle and inspired by the Highway 6 research and photography of David W. Darby.

Valle Drive In, Lambs Grove

In the 1950s, there were nearly 70 drive-ins in Iowa. Now there are only five. Valle is the oldest drive-in in Iowa, having opened for business in 1948. It’s also the most authentic. The teasers shown at the beginning of movies are original, and so is the snack shack and our popcorn maker. The neon Valle sign is also original.
